<p class="ql-block"> We have followed Prof. Xu in learning English for more than ten years. She teaches us not only English language, but also learning methods. Due to her guidance, I have grasped some learning methods, which prove effective in enhancing my English. Now I would like to share with you today.</p> <p class="ql-block"> How to learn new words and expressions?</p><p class="ql-block">As we all know that it is important to pronounce them accurately, and understand their meanings. How do I practice? I first make use of the ‘New Words and Expressions’ attached to each lesson. I pronounce the words accurately according to the International Phonetic Alphabet; pay attention to the stressed syllable of multi-syllable words; and find out the general rules for word pronunciation. Then I read carefully the explanations of these words given in the weekly guideline, which helps me to learn new words with familiar words, phrases and sentences. After comparing the new words with similar words, I find it enhances my memory.</p><p class="ql-block"> </p><p class="ql-block"><br></p><p class="ql-block"> </p> <p class="ql-block"> It is hard for us seniors to memorize new words without context. I think the passage is the context and make our own sentences is also a context. While reading the text I pay attention to phrases, idiomatical usage or fixed collocation of words. I love doing the sentence-making exercises, which help me to write better sentences. </p> <p class="ql-block"> How to improve listening and speaking skills?</p><p class="ql-block">"Listening and speaking are priority," this was my middle school teacher's advice I heard on my first English lesson. Just like a baby, he begins to listen to his mother's speaking, then learns by repetition. This is also the rule of language learning for adults. In order not to be a deaf and dumb in learning English. I Listen to the text recording carefully and attentively over and over again, first for understanding the main ideas and then for mimicking the recording.</p><p class="ql-block"> </p> <p class="ql-block"> I love reading the passage aloud after listening. I read the sentences carefully: pause at the interval appropriately, and also pay attention to consonant omission and vowel concatenation. I believe it is important to read the sentences of a passage with correct pronunciation and intonation, which helps me fully understand the article and the author’s emotion, in addition to remember some good sentences. Vocal recitation helps us to activate the vocal cords and auditory (organs, entering the ears and the brain, stimulating the brain and enhancing my memory). (有聲朗讀有助于激活聲帶和聽(tīng)覺(jué)器官，聲音傳入耳朵和大腦，刺激大腦并增強(qiáng)記憶）</p> <p class="ql-block"> How to turn input into output?</p><p class="ql-block"> From learning the passage, we have memorized some new words and expressions, we have analyzed the sentence structures and understood the main ideas of the passage. In terms of language learning, all these efforts are . However, output is more interesting. We make meaningful sentences, we sum up the main ideas of the passage in our own words, we discuss the topics which are close to our life and then write essays. To me, all these output exercises are meaningful challenges. I am very happy that Teacher Xu praises me for the progress I’ve made in writing.
