Marty Supreme is loosely based on the memoir (“The Money Player”) of Marty Reisman, a 1950’s ping-pong champion lived in New York, although there is no mention of him in the movie, no credit given to him at all because he is dead, died in 2012.

Marty Supreme is another movie that’s very exhausting to watch, it could very well be titled “One Hustle after Another”. Needless to say, this isn’t my favorite movie. However, the talented Timothee Chalamet, playing Marty Mauser, is fantastic.

It was 1952, Marty worked in his uncle’s shoe store as a shoe salesman, but he has a big and singular dream - to win the table tennis championship on the world stage. Unable to finance the trip to the London open tennis match, he robbed his uncle’s safe, fled the crummy apartment he shared with his mother and flied to London. Supremely confident that he was on the cusp of winning big, Marty upgraded himself to the Ritz hotel to be near the once-famous-actress Kay (played by Gwyneth Paltrow), whom he was trying to woo and seduce. When Kay asked him, “What if this plan of yours does not come through”? Marty answered, “It hasn’t entered into my conscience”! That was how single-minded and how blindly confident he was.

The reality slapped him hard on the face. He lost the final to the Japanese player Koto Endo, and he also raked up a huge bill from Ritz. The International table tennis association (ITTA) paid the bill, but banned him from ever competing in the World Championship unless he repaid the ITTA.

Returning to New York, Marty started one hustle after another in order to make the trip to the next World Championship in Tokyo, to defeat Koto, to prove he was the true champion.

Make no mistake, Marty Supreme is not a hero’s story, far from it. The character is morally bankrupt, he could pull out any scheme or stunt to get what he wanted, he took advantage of his friends, his girlfriend, he steals, he cheats, he’s rude, he’s reckless, he could also be shameless, he talks before he thinks, …, aside from all the vices, he has one winning quality: audacious and confident, he also has the burning desire and the single-mindedness to realize his dream, no one can get into his way.

Chalamet brought certain charm to Marty’s character, so that Marty was still likable despite his many flaws. For this role, he had to learn to play ping pong like a true professional athlete. I think Chalamet is the top contender for the best actor this year.
